Finding Information About Alabama Prison Inmates

The Alabama Department of Corrections aims to confine the criminals convicted of various offenses in the state of Alabama within a safe, strict, and humane environment, with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating those criminals. Their vision is to ensure that the inmates learn to abide by the law and are able to reintegrate into society upon their release. There are currently 30,896 prison inmates in the state of Alabama, among which 2,336 are female and 28,560 are male. The prison system in the state has 29 prison facilities under the supervision of the Department of Corrections.

The re-entry program of the department assists the inmates in becoming productive members of society after they are released. This program offers the inmates an insight into various aspects of life after release and teaches them how to establish themselves once again in society. The Department provides the inmates with the following information:

* How to access immediate food and shelter after release
* How to get a driver’s license and identification card
* How to access support and adequate mentoring
* How to re-gain privileges such as parental rights
* How to find employment

Apart from assisting the inmates, the prerelease program has also been designed to promote greater public safety.

Searching for Inmate Records

The Alabama Department of Corrections maintains a record of all inmates except those regarded as youthful offenders. These records are available for the public to view. You may search for information on currently incarcerated inmates as well as those who have already been released. Search for a presently incarcerated inmate online by visiting the inmate search web page of the DOC, located at http://www.doc.state.al.us/inmsearch.asp. However, only the information on present inmates is accessible via the Internet; historical data cannot be accessed online.

The Alabama Institutional Number (AIS number) is a six-digit code that is assigned to each inmate. You must always provide the AIS number, the first name, and the last name of an inmate when conducting a search. You can view up to fifty search results. The Alabama Department of Public Safety is responsible for releasing these records.

You may also want to know about the location of a sex offender who has been released from prison. This knowledge could help you stay safe if an offender moves to your neighborhood. To obtain this information, visit the community section of the Department of Public Safety website at http://community.dps.alabama.gov/. You can search by entering the last name of the offender, county, city, and zip code. These records are provided to the citizens of Alabama to promote public awareness.
