Inmate Classification in Arkansas Prison System

In Arkansas State, inmates in the state correctional facilities are classified under three types of classifications: medical, custody and on good behavior. The offenders at the time of admission into the Arkansas correctional facilities undergo an evaluation process which is referred to as “intake”. The adult male offenders are sent to Pine Buff for their evaluation process and intake and the adult female offenders are sent to the McPherson facility at Newport for their evaluation and intake process.

After the evaluation and intake process is completed the offenders are sent to another facility where they are assigned a classification level based on the initial evaluation. The initial classification process lasts for 60 days. The inmate assignment is based on factors such as the availability of beds, behavior of the inmate, the facility available at a particular prison and the availability of jobs in a particular prison. In case of health reasons and security concerns, the initial assignment procedure can be waived.

Assault, drug peddling, burglary, embezzlement, forgery, robbery, and child molestation are some of the major offenses committed by the inmates who are locked up in the various prisons in Arkansas State.
