The Champaign County Circuit Clerk is currently Linda S. Frank and she is in charge of keeping everything recorded about the proceedings of the municipal and county Champaign courts . Illinois’ Supreme Court, Appeals Court and the Circuit Court give direction to the Circuit Clerk to ensure that the laws and state regulations are upheld. It is the clerk’s office that keeps all the documents related to probate, adoption, chancery, support, criminal law, juvenile, mental, local improvement, drainage, small claims, ordinance violations, traffic and prepares the appeals for a higher court, summons the jurors, issues passports and deeds of tax – the office manages as many as 10 million dollars' worth of investments, fines, restitutions, costs and supports annually.

When you are trying to access the court records in Champaign, it is this clerk’s office that can help you. You have to submit a request to this office either personally by visiting the office or over the phone. There is however another way to access your Champagne court records, and that is via the Internet. You can visit the state website to find the record you need. These records are also available through private websites.

The Various Types of Records Available from the Champaign Court

The Champaign Clerk of Courts allows you to access the following types of court records:

•    Records pertaining to all births in Champaign, with detailed information on the child as well as the parents. These are called ‘Birth Records’.
•    Records to keep track of every death including the name, age and reason of death of the person. These are the ‘Death Records’,
•    Records that help you find out whether a person has a criminal background. You can also find out whether a company has ever been sued or not. Finding criminal and arrest records can be extremely important for many reasons. For example, if you have a small child, you might want to check the background of the nanny and your neighbors.
•    Records related to weddings that take place in Champaign. By accessing these records, you can find out the date and place of the marriage, the addresses of the spouses, and also names of the witnesses and the person who conducted the ceremony. These records are known as ‘marriage records’.
•    Records of legal pronouncements of divorce between any estranged couple. Accessing divorce records can be important when you are considering getting married to someone whom you know was married before and you just want to be certain that the person is indeed divorced. You will also need the divorce record to produce it in court when you are getting remarried.

As is evident from the above, there are all kinds of court records you can access in Champaign. All you have to do is approach the clerk’s office. Remember, the court is legally obliged to maintain the records and share the information when you ask for it. There are just a few exceptions.
