Requesting a Colorado Sex Offender List

There are about 10,096 individuals whose names have been registered with the Colorado sex offender list as of June 2nd, 2008. According to the Colorado State Court Administrator’s Office, about sixty percent of the sex offenders in the state are registered in the Colorado sex offender list; these individuals have been sentenced to community placements like probation, parole, or community services. The remaining sex offenders have been sentenced to incarceration in county jails under the supervision of the Department of Corrections.

Laws Concerning Sex Offender Registration

Sex offenders receive a notice from judges, probation and parole officers, the Department of Human Services, county jails, the Department of Corrections, community corrections, and law enforcement directing them to register their names with the Colorado sex offender list. In Colorado a sex offender should register with the law enforcement agency that has jurisdiction over the area where he or she resides, attends school, or is employed. If a sex offender lives within the limits of a city, he or she should register with the police department of the city; if the offender lives outside the limits of a city, he or she should register with the county sheriff's department.

Public Viewing of the List

Citizens can request to view the Colorado sex offender list in several ways. They can request the list via mail or in person from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, which maintains a database of sex offenders called the Sex Offender Registry. In order to place a request for the Colorado sex offender list, an individual must complete a request form, available at the CBI website. The form can be downloaded at this address: http://sor.state.co.us/documents/sxo_req_form2.pdf. Citizens can also obtain the request form through fax, mail, or in person from the CBI headquarters. The CBI delivers the the Colorado sex offender list within ten days to parties who have requested it.

When an individual requests a copy of the Colorado sex offender list, only a part of the information maintained by the CBI is released. The information that the CBI does release includes the name, date of birth, address or addresses, and various pseudonyms or aliases of the registrant, as well as a detailed history of his or her convictions. The CBI does not release information concerning the victims of sex offenders. The CBI charges a reasonable fee for the task of searching for, retrieving, and copying the information of a particular offender.
