Idaho Area Code Directory Information
Devised by AT&T and Bells Laboratories in the 1940s, the North American Numbering Plan was the original area code plan. It was put into effect in US and Canada in 1947. Initially the area codes were known as the numbering plan areas. The area codes are the first three digit numbers of the ten digit telephone numbers. If you are dialing from the same area, you need not dial the area code.
Area Code 208
Area codes were implemented in US and Canada so that the telecommunications network could be organized in a proper way. According to the original numbering area plan, Idaho was assigned only one numbering plan area, area code 208. The small population of the state was the reason behind this. Only one area code was sufficient for all the telephone numbers of the state.
An estimation of the Federal Communications Commission in 2001 revealed that the area code 208 would be exhausted within 2003 because of the increase in the population and the rise in the telephone numbers. The estimation indicated a probable split. But this was delayed when the Idaho Public Utilities Commission introduced the concept of the telephone number pooling in 2002.
The idea of telephone number pooling was initially introduced in the Boise area of Idaho. Later, in 2007, the concept was implemented on the whole state. This was done to avoid the projected exhaustion of telephone numbers in 2010. The whole state of Idaho is served by a single area code 208 in present times as well. There are no plans for any split or overlay of area code 208 in the near future.
