Illinois has 102 counties and 22 judicial circuits. Each judicial circuit in Illinois covers at least two counties or more. Each of these circuits utilizes a unified court system that consists of trial courts; these operate under a chief judge who exercises centralized authority, and supervises and coordinates all administrative functions of the court.

The important county courts in Illinois, such as the county courthouse in Cook county, are divided into six departments. These departments are:
· The Chancery Division
· County Division
· Criminal Division
· Domestic Relations Division
· Law Division
· Probates Division.
The Chancery Division hears case matters relating to foreclosures on mortgages, class actions, any name changes, injunction cases, cases dealing with contracts, rights of the creditors, liens, vehicular impoundment, judgments that require any declaratory matter, trusteeships, reviews on administrative and statutory issues, and cases that concern the dissolution of partnerships.
The County Division gives judgment on matters dealing with marriage of minors, adoption cases, annexation cases by a taxing body, taxes dealing with inheritance, taxes on real estates, matters involving elections, municipal organizations and cases on mental health proceedings.
The Criminal Division deals with serious criminal acts such as assault, robbery, burglary cases, murder charges and sexual assault cases.
The Domestic Relations Division has jurisdiction over cases involving divorce, any legal separation cases, cases pertaining to child support, parentage issues, child support cases and child custody and visitation rights, and any cases dealing with civil orders of protection.
The Law Division has jurisdiction over civil cases that involve suits filed for any recovery of damages in the form of cash amounts that is more than $ 30,000 in Chicago and more than $ 100,000 in the other suburban districts. It also hears several types of reviews on administrative matters. Some of the cases heard by the Law division are cases about wrongful death or personal injury cases, injuries arising from motor vehicles, any cases on legal malpractice, cases which require determination of liability of a product, any intentional tort cases, cases on commercial litigations, cases involving injuries arising from construction issues, cases dealing with breach of warranty or contract, issues on fraud, property damage and employment security.
The Probate Division gives decisions on the matters pertaining to wills and estate administration.
