Information About Income Tax Records

Confidential records are information which are submitted to a department for administering the program. Such information is not accessible to the public by statute. The confidential records include state tax return and federal information, renter assistance claim and property tax information, personnel records, political reform audit information, investigative files and proprietary information. These records cannot be used by the employees for any purpose whatsoever.

The income tax records are protected by the confidentiality provisions stated in the Tax laws and it applies to the details contained in a tax return, audit, collection and investigative report, information given by the taxpayer related to his tax liability, information provided by an individual on behalf of the taxpayer related to his financial affairs, information furnished in or extracted from the federal tax return, federal audit or investigation report, revenue agent’s report, or any vital piece of information available from the Internal Revenue Service which includes data in the form of a tape, it also includes information on whether a taxpayer has duly filed his income tax or not and information on tax returns which are generated and processed electronically.

 

Information Contained in Income Tax Records

 

The information which can be found in the Income tax records are first or the initial name and the last name of the taxpayer, joint holder or spouse’s name, home address, social security number, city, state, ZIP code.

The filing status of the taxpayer i.e. whether the taxpayer is married, single and filing jointly or separately and qualifying widower with dependant child.

Exemptions with total number of exemptions claimed are included as well. Income of the taxpayer in form of wages, salaries, tips, taxable interest, ordinary and qualified dividends, taxable refunds, credits, capital gains etc.

The taxes and credits which include itemized deductions or standard deductions, exemptions, taxable income, tax, alternative minimum tax, foreign tax credit, child tax credit, education credits, retirement savings an other taxes like self employment tax, additional taxes such as AEIC payments and household employment taxes.

Retrieving a Copy of Income Tax Record

 

You can retrieve a copy of federal income tax record if you failed to file an income tax return for the last two years in a row or if you did file but failed to keep copies of it. You can request for a copy of the income tax record by filling out the form 4506T available on the official website. You can request for the transcript by mailing it or faxing it to the address: Internal Revenue Service, RAIVS Team, Stop 6705-B41, Kansas City, MO 64999, Fax 816-292-6102 or you can call the IRS by dialing 1-800-829-1040, which is a toll free number.
