Types of Inmates Held in Indiana

In Indiana the prison system works on the basis of four levels of security such as minimum, low, medium, high medium and maximum level of security. Offenders are assigned to the levels of security on the basis of the nature of the crime committed, the length of the sentence that an offender may be subjected to by a sentencing court and the offender’s previous history of crimes.

Each offender is evaluated at the Rockville Correctional Facility and at the Diagnostic Center, where the offender is given a score based on the instrument of “classification designation”. According to this classification procedure, each offender is judged on the basis of the severity of the offense committed by the individual, length of his or her prison sentence, the type or degree of violence involved, if the offender has any trouble with regards to substance abuse or not, if the offender has any history of previous escapes, and his or her conduct while incarcerated. After this procedure the offenders are then assigned to appropriate security levels. Violent offenders and sexual offenders are not eligible for a minimum security level.

According to recent prison statistics, there are about 25,832 adult male offenders, 2,466 adult female offenders, 692 juvenile male offenders, and about 94 female juvenile offenders housed under the correctional facilities of the Indiana State.  Cases involving burglary, drug abuse and peddling, robbery, forgery and child molestation cases are some of the major reasons for which the offenders are serving their sentences in Indiana State prisons.
