Searching the Indiana Sex Offender List
There are about 10,368 sex offenders whose names have been registered with the Indiana sex offender list. According to Indiana law, sex offenders residing in the state must be registered with the Indiana sex offender list if they intend to live, work, or study in Indiana for more than seven days. This law is outlined in the code IC 11-8-8-7. Offenders must register with the county sheriff's department where they intend to reside.
Information on Sex Offenders Available to Citizens
Individuals seeking detailed information about a particular offender, or about the Indiana sex offender list itself, should contact the sheriff’s department of their county. Individuals who obtain information about an offender from the Indiana sex offender list he should not misuse the information; if the information is misused, such as for the purpose of threatening or harassing an offender, the action is considered a Class A misdemeanor according to IC 5-2-5-5.
The Indiana sex offender list is available at the Indiana Sheriff’s Sex and Violent Offender Registry website, located at http://www.insor.org/insasoweb/initAdvancedSearchForm.do. Users can search the registry by residential address, city of residence, zip code, or name of an offender.
Any existing community law enforcement authorities are notified when a sex offender moves into the community. All sex offenders are required to register with the appropriate authorities within seven days of their moving into a new location. In the case of sexually violent predators, an alert is issued to local authorities within a span of 72 hours from the offender's release from prison. Offenders are not allowed to live within 1000 feet of youth program centers, school property, or public parks as per IC 35-42-4-11.

Information Described in the Sex Offender Registry
Each entry in the Indiana sex offender list contains a description of the offense, the county of conviction, the date of conviction, the sentence that has been imposed, and the cause of conviction as per IC 11-8-2-13. The registry was created in compliance with IC 36-2-13-5.5; all sex offenders are required to register as per IC 11-8-8. Once the name of an offender is added to the registry, it will remain there indefinitely. Offenders are not allowed to change the name that appears on the list.
