Iowa Court Information

The Iowa court system can be broadly classified into state courts and federal courts. However, the state court hierarchy just has 3 courts, and so it can be said that it has been simplified to a great extent. Since there are not too many courts in the state, it becomes less confusing for someone who wants to approach the court for legal intervention. It is now easier to know which court to approach.

The hierarchy of the Iowa courts system in the state is as follows:

•    Supreme Court
•    Appeals Court
•    The District Courts (these are present in 8 districts)

According to the state constitution, the Supreme Court (http://www.iowacourts.gov/Supreme_Court/) is at the top of the hierarchy. The Judicial Nominating Commission in the state nominates candidates and out of them, the state Governor selects the Chief Justice of the court.

The Appeals Court (http://www.iowacourts.gov/Court_of_Appeals/) is in the intermediate level and its objective is to review any appeals that come before it from a lower court. The decisions taken by this court are deemed final. The Supreme Court of the state, being a higher body, can review the decisions made in the Appeals Court.

The District Courts (http://www.iowacourts.gov/District_Courts/) are where the initial trials take place. There are 8 such judicial districts in Iowa and they are:

•    District One
•    District Two
•    District Three
•    District Four
•    District Five
•    District Six
•    District Seven
•    District Eight
