Iowa Sex Offender Registry Information

The law outlining the basic s of Iowa Sex Offender Registry was enacted on July 1, 1995 and is available in Chapter 692A Code of Iowa. According to this, all sex offenders who have been convicted of or pled guilty to certain sex crimes, post July 1, 1995, need to register with the state of Iowa. The sexual crimes, that make the individual convicted of committing them as a sex offender who requires registration, include sexually violent crimes, crimes against a minor and sexual exploitation. The individual may be sentenced or he or she may be under incarceration, probation, parole or work release. The individual sex offenders who have received deferred judgments or a deferred sentence also need to register as per Iowa laws. Out of state offenders or those from federal convictions need registration as well.

 

Iowa Sex Offender Registration Procedure

 

The Iowa sex offender registration procedure involves the local sheriff’s offices as well as the Iowa Department of Public Safety. The registration papers are given to the sex offender on release from incarceration, probation, parole or work release. He or she must register with the sheriff’s office of the county of residence or where he or she attends school or is employed. The sex offender is given 5 business days time to register with the local law enforcement agency. According to the Iowa Statute, the juvenile offenders also require registering; so does the offenders from outside state that moves into the state of Iowa.
