Kentucky Area Code Directory Information

The system of assigning area codes to different places in the country was begun as part of the North American Numbering Plan. It was implemented as a result of a joint venture of the Bell Laboratories and AT&T during the 1940s and was aimed at streamlining the telecommunications network in the different states. Kentucky area code directory includes a comprehensive list of all the phone numbers in the state.

The State of Kentucky is covered by five area codes. These include area code 502,270,859,364 and 606.

Area Code 502

The area code 502 is the designated code for north central parts of Kentucky. It forms a part of the set of original area codes that were introduced in 1947 as part of the North American Numbering Plan. It mainly serves the city of Louisville and the suburban areas surrounding it and also serves the capital of the state Frankfurt. A total of 25 counties and their constituent 69 cities are served by the area code 502. It has 529 exchanges currently in operation. The counties that are covered by this area code include Jefferson County, Carroll County, Trimble County, Oldham County, Anderson County, Spencer County, Bullitt County, Shelby County, Franklin County, Owen County, Henry County and Scott County.  Certain sections of the Meade County and the Hardin County also fall under this code.  Some of the cities served by this area code include Georgetown, Louisville, Bardstown, Shelbyville and Frankfort.

Area Code 270

The area code 270 is the designated code for the counties that lie on the western parts of the State of Kentucky. The regions that function under this area code were previously served by area code 502. It was only in April 1999 that this new code was made operational. The ever increasing pressure of numbers ensured that the code was exhausted by 2007 and it was announced by the Kentucky Public Service Commission that the areas that were served by area code 270 and were located in close proximity to the Pennyrile Parkway would have a new area code.

Area code 270 covers a total of 50 counties and its constituent 214 cities. There are at present 742 exchanges that operate under this particular area code. Some of the cities covered by the area code include Elizabethtown, Bowling Green, Owensboro, Cloverport, Brownsville, West Louisville, Mayfield, Bremen, Smithland, Park City and many more.

The implementation of the new code for the area has been delayed as a result of the implementation of number conservation measures that includes number pooling. The demand for numbers dedicated to fax modems and computers have also dropped down significantly.

Area Code 859

The area code was created to reduce the load of the existing area code 606. It began its operations from 1999 onwards. The area code covers 31 counties and 82 cities that fall within its jurisdiction. There are 467 exchanges that function as part of area code 859. The list of counties encompassed by the area code include names like Harrison County, Garrard County, Boone County, Washington County, Bourbon County, Jessamine County, Mercer County, Fayette County, Montgomery County, Boyle County and Pendleton County. The cities that fall under the purview of the area code include Covington, Nicholasville, Florence, Richmond, Mount Sterling and Danville.

Area Code 364

The area code 364 is all set to serve some parts of west Kentucky. The cities that would be served by this area code include Hopkinsville, Paducah, Madisonville, Murray and Henderson.  The section of the Fort Campbell Army base that falls under Kentucky will also be served by area code 364. The proposal for the introduction of this area code was put forward by the Kentucky Public Service Commission. The permissive dialing of this newly introduced code was scheduled to begin from April 2008 while mandatory dialing was supposed to begin from October 2008.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission made its observation clear when it was seen that mandatory number pooling that was introduced in the region in the recent past could delay the operations of the newly formulated code. At present, as per the latest deadline set by the PSC, the code will be set in operation right from the beginning of 2012.

Area Code 606

The area code 606 serves the eastern portion of Kentucky. The area code serves 52 counties and 360 cities and has 512 exchanges operating under it. Some of the cities that are served by area code 606 include counties like Harlan, Wayne, Bath, Elliott, Pendleton, Rockcastle, Carter, Morgan, Pulaski, Magoffin and many more. The list of cities served by this area code includes names like Somerset, Ashland, Maysville, London, Pikeville, Hazard and Corbin. Most of these cities are part of the region designated as Eastern Mountain Coal Fields. The increasing pressure of numbers on this area code made it necessary to shed its load. As a result a new area code was created in 1999 to transfer the load of the existing area code of 606.
