Michigan County Court Information and Location
The Michigan county courts are the circuit courts and district courts within the State of Michigan. There are fifty-seven circuit courts in Michigan. There are 221 judges serving the 57 courts. The circuit courts in Michigan hold hearings in cases related to tort, contracts, property related cases where at least $25,000 is involved, all civil cases, a few special domestic relation cases, felony cases and juvenile delinquencies. The circuit courts are general jurisdiction courts and they also hear appeals from administrative agencies.
Michigan County District Courts
Michigan district courts are limited jurisdiction courts. There are about 105 district courts in the State of Michigan, served by 258 judges. In most of the cases, a jury trial is held. The cases that fall under its jurisdiction are tort cases, contract cases, property cases where a maximum of $25,000 are involved, small claim cases (not exceeding an amount of $3,000), preliminary hearings of felonies and misdemeanor cases, and cases related to ordinance violations.
Macomb County

Oakland County
In Oakland County, the district courts hear misdemeanor cases and felony cases. The circuit court deals with civil and criminal cases and also hears appeals from district and probate courts. The family division of the circuit court in Oakland County deals with divorce, adoptions, juvenile delinquencies, and child abuse. There is a division known as the “Friend of the court” that is responsible for handling sensitive domestic relation cases.
A third division known as the probate courts, which are locally funded limited jurisdiction courts, hears cases on guardianships, conservatorships, mental health matters and cases about trust issues.
