Michigan Sex Offender List Information
The Michigan State Police Public Sex Offender Registry, or PSOR, is available to the general public via the Internet. The registry has been made available to the public with the intent of assisting the citizens of Michigan in preventing future criminal acts by registered sex offenders.
The Sex Offenders Registration Act, MCL 28.721, directs the Michigan State Police to maintain and develop a public registry, and also provides guidelines on the type of offender information that should be made available to the public. The legislature states that an individual who has been convicted of committing an offense falling under this act poses a serious threat to the health, morals, safety, and welfare of the people of Michigan, especially children. Sex offenders are required to register as such so that the public can be provided with a comprehensive and effective means of monitoring these individuals. The currently active laws regarding offender registration are available on the offender details page, but due to continuous legislative changes, this may not be indicative of the active laws at the time of the offender’s conviction.
Information Available in the PSOR
The information that is available on the PSOR is subject to changes. The Michigan State Police is responsible for updating the information in the PSOR; this is a measure taken to provide accurate and complete information to the public. Most of the information is contained in the public records, but some information, such as the physical description and residential address, are acquired from offenders themselves. Therefore, the MSP does not guarantee that the information available on the PSOR is entirely accurate. It is the responsibility of individuals using the system to be sure that they are viewing the correct records. The information in the PSOR must not be used for any unlawful activity or to injure, harass, or commit crime against any individual whose name is in the registry or is working at any address mentioned in the registry. Laws Regarding Registration Requirements
Sex offender registration is required for all those convicted of qualifying offenses on or after October 1st, 1995. Those who were convicted prior to this date, but are still incarcerated or on parole or probation, must also register. These offenders are registered locally by agents who deal with probation or parole. Offenders are required to register prior to sentencing but after conviction.
Failure to register with the Michigan sex offender list and failure of a sex offender to notify the law enforcement authorities about a change of address are both considered felonies; these offenses can be punished by imprisonment for a period of up to four years and a fine of $2000. Failure to comply with verification rules is a misdemeanor, punished by 93 days in prison and a fine of $1000. Failure to sign the registration form is a misdemeanor and carries the same punishment.
