Initially this area code served the entire eastern part of the Missouri State. It was first split in 1996 and overlaid with the area code 573 and again in May 22, 1999 to create the area code 636 to cater to the rapidly growing population of the outer suburbs.
Before the system of number portability was introduced, the 314 area code used to also cater to all the cell phone calls that originated from the areas covered by the area code 636. At present, however this area code only caters to a small fraction of what it once used to. It covers the St. Louis City as well as most of the suburban areas that fall under the St. Louis County. The area code 314 shares a boundary with the 618 area code and the area code 636.

The area code 417 covers the southwestern parts of the Missouri State. The 417 area code caters to a population of about 897,058. The area code 816 is one of the two original area codes that were assigned to the Missouri State. It covers the Saint Joseph city, Kansas City and its metropolitan region. Initially this area code served most parts of the northwestern region of the Missouri State along its border with Nebraska, Kansas as well as Iowa. But at present it only shares its border with the Kansas State. The remaining area now falls under the area code 660.
