The various area codes that belong to the state of Missouri includes the 314 area code,  area code 417, the 573 area code, area code 636,  area code 660 and area code 816. In 1947 the North American Numbering Plan Administration or NANPA had assigned the area code 314 for the eastern part of Missouri and area code 816 for the western region of the state. While area code 314 and the area code 816 are the original area codes for  the Missouri State, that were established in 1947, the rest of the area codes were created later from the original area codes to accommodate the growing need of the population of the state.

Area Code 314

Initially this area code served the entire eastern part of the Missouri State. It was first split in 1996 and overlaid with the area code 573 and again in May 22, 1999 to create the area code 636 to cater to the rapidly growing population of the outer suburbs.

Before the system of number portability was introduced, the 314 area code used to also cater to all the cell phone calls that originated from the areas covered by the area code 636. At present, however this area code only caters to a small fraction of what it once used to. It covers the St. Louis City as well as most of the suburban areas that fall under the St. Louis County. The area code 314 shares a boundary with the 618 area code and the area code 636.

The counties originally covered by this area code were:  Boone, Cole, Christian, Cook, Jackson, Franklin, Jersey, Jefferson, Morgan, Perry, New Madrid, Phelps, Pulaski, Saint Francois, Saint Charles, Saint Louis, Warren.

Some of the cities served by the area code 314 are: Arnold, Ballwin, Cedar Hill, Union, Valley Park, Saint Louis, Villa Ridge Grover and many more.

This area code consists of 634 telephone exchanges.

Area Code 417

The area code 417 covers the southwestern parts of the Missouri State. The 417 area code caters to a population of about 897,058. There are 33 counties and 227 cities that fall under this area code along with a total of 624 telephone exchanges starting with the telephone exchange 200 and ending with the telephone exchange 998.

Area Code 573

The 573 area code caters to a considerably large area of the Missouri excluding the St. Louis area. The area code 573 serves a major part of the eastern region of Missouri with the lake Ozarks at its western tip along with the entire south eastern parts of Missouri including Bootheel as well as the areas near the Mississippi river. This area code also covers Doniphan which lies at its south western part.

The area code 573 caters to 52 counties, 314 cities and has 624 telephone exchanges starting with the telephone exchange 200 and ending with the telephone exchange 999. It caters to a population of about 1,096,155.

The area code 636 was created when the original area code 314 was split into two parts. It caters to the east central part of the Missouri State adjacent to the St. Louis area excluding the St. Louis City. This area code serves a population of 865,400.  Eleven counties and 69 cities belong to this area code along with 636 telephone exchanges starting with the telephone exchange 200 and ending with the telephone exchange 998.

The eleven counties served by the area code 636 are: Franklin, Jefferson, Gasconade,, Lincoln, Montgomery, Saint Louis, Saint Francois, Saint Charles, Washington and Warren.

Some of the important cities covered by this area code are: Arnold, Augusta, Festus, Silex, Sullivan, Troy, Wright City, Saint Clair, Saint Ann, Saint Charles, Portage Des Sioux, Pevely and many more.

Area Code 660

This is a relatively new area code which was established in 1997 and assigned to the western and northern region of the Missouri State. The area code 660 was split off from area code 816.

The area code 660 caters to 47 counties, 261 cities and has a total of 444 telephone exchanges serving a population of about 439,647.

Area Code 816

The area code 816 is one of the two original area codes that were assigned to the Missouri State. It covers the Saint Joseph city, Kansas City and its metropolitan region. Initially this area code served most parts of the northwestern region of the Missouri State along its border with Nebraska, Kansas as well as Iowa. But at present it only shares its border with the Kansas State. The remaining area now falls under the area code 660.

At present this area code covers 22 counties, 102 cities and has 585 telephone exchanges under it.
