Missouri County Court Information
The Missouri county courts hold the records of cases which involve divorces, dissolution of partnerships, debts, adoptions, judgments and cases regarding direct and indirect indexes. These courts also store the criminal records and files. Civil case files based on citizenship grants, certificates of allegiance, petitions and declaration of intention are kept in the county clerk’s office as well as an index of civil case files. Missouri citizen records which are federal records are located at the National Archives-Central Plains Regions.
Missouri County Court Records
In the office of the county court clerk, there is a index for common pleas, records of all proceedings, records of births and deaths, chancery minute books, county court records, road and right of way records as well as surveyor records, which includes plats and field notes made by the county surveyor. These offices of the county courts usually store county treasurer’s notes, records of marks and brands, bonds and commissions, real estate assessments, stray notices and tax books. In earlier days the county courts were known as the “Court of Common Pleas”.
Missouri Probate Records
These probate records are kept at the county level, of which many have been microfilmed by the Genealogical Society of Missouri, in association with the Missouri State Archives and the Missouri Supreme Court. The index of probate records contains court records, letters of testament, executor’s bonds, inventories, bills of sale, court appointments, guardian and curator records. In addition to this probate minute books, probate court records and case files are also kept here.
County Court Jurisdiction in Missouri
Missouri county courts exercise both original civil and criminal jurisdiction. These cases begin here, and trials also occur here. The county courts have many divisions such as small claims, municipal, family, criminal, juvenile and probate.
