Find Out More About the North Carolina Area Code Directory
Telecommunication system had distributed the whole country into different area codes. They are also called the Numbering Plan Areas. Area codes are the first three digits of the ten-digit phone numbers. These area codes designate a particular region of the state under which all the numbers begin with the same first three digits. These codes are covered by a number of telephone exchanges. If you are calling from the same area, you do not need to put the area code while dialing.
The state of North Carolina has seven active area codes under it. They are 252, 336, 704, 828, 910, 919, and 980

This area code designates the Piedmont Triad region of the state and covers the Foothills and Mountains of north. This area code was added to the North Carolina area code directory in 1997 to relieve the load of area code 910 which was over burdened thus making it difficult for the administration to manage the service. Area Code 828
Area code 828 was created in 1988 for the mountain regions on the west of North Carolina. It covers few important cities like Asheville, Hickory, Cherokee, Marion, Boone, Brevard, Franklin, Waynesville, Morganton, Lenoir and Hendersonville. Before 828 came into existence, this region was covered by area code 704. But with the increase in population, there was an automatic increase in the number of cellular phones and pagers. Now the requirement for a separate area code was felt and was subsequently created.
Area Code 910
Area code 910 covers the south eastern part of North Carolina. The major cities served by this particular area code are Jacksonville, Fayetteville, Wilmington, Lumberton, and Laurinburg. This area code was established on November 14, 1993 when area code 919 was split to shed off its load due to increasing population and number of telephone and cell phone subscribers. On December 15, 1997, it was itself split and a new area code 336 was created.
Area Code 919
The area code 919 serves eleven counties of North Carolina which cover the major cities of the state. The cities include Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and Cary. It also covers the north suburbs of Oxford and south of Goldsboro. It came into existence in 1950s when 704 had a split. In 1993, it was split to create 910 and again 1998, to create 252. In 2001, it was due for an overlay with a new area code 984 but authorities deferred the plan as the requirement was met for the time being.
Area Code 980
This area code is an overlay of the area code 704. It covers the same areas but are used mainly for pagers and wireless phones. Due to the overlay, the callers of this area are required to use all ten digits even when calling a local subscriber.
