North Carolina Sex Offender Registry Information

The sex offenders are often reported to repeat their crimes even after serving a sentence for a previous offense. Keeping in mind the high risk posed by the sex offenders to the people and the children of the society the General Assembly established the sex Offender Registry in the state of North Carolina, the United States of America in January 1996. The law pertaining to “the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry” requires all residents of North Carolina convicted of any sexual offense to register with the sheriff of the county where he or she resides.

The main aim of maintaining a sex offender registry is to provide valuable resource and information about the sex offenders to the residents of the state and ensure better safety. The offender registry is designed in such a manner that it records all past records of a sex offender and also maintains his present whereabouts. The North Carolina Sex Offender Registry will allow you to search the records and learn about any offender. The information about each offender it stores include full name, date of birth, alias names and identities, recent photograph, place of birth, offenses he or she was charged for, date of offense, date of conviction, age of the victim, whether proved guilty or not, the court verdict and the sentence inflicted upon the offender, permanent and temporary residence addresses, driver’s license, any identification mark, physical description like height, weight, eye color, hair color etc., fingerprints, DNA sample, employment notifications and some others.

If the registrant is a presently a resident of the state of North Carolina and was convicted for a crime but did not receive any sentence, he or she must immediately register. But if an offender currently residing in North Carolina received a sentence and was sent to a correctional institution, he or she may register within ten days of release from the institute. From December 1, 2008, this law was modified to state that any current resident of North Carolina receiving an active sentence for a sexual offense is required to register within 10 days of his or her release from the correctional division he or she was sent to.

For offenders moving in to North Carolina from any other state, a registration with the local law enforcement agency is required within ten days of his arrival. Since December 1, 2008, the time limit was shortened and any sexual offender arriving to North Carolina from any other state must report to the registration division within three days of his or her arrival.  Non-resident workers or students of North Carolina convicted of sexual offenses are also required to register with the authorities.
