Area Code 216
The area code 216 is the North American telephone area code for the region of Cleveland. One of the original area codes issued as per the North American Numbering Plan of January 1, 1947, 216 is the parent of area codes 330 and 440. These are some of the communities enlisted under the area code 216: Brooklyn, Cleveland Heights, Lakewood, Maple Heights, North Randall, Orange, Parma, Seven Hills, and Woodmere.
Area Codes 234 and 330
234 and 330 are the North American telephone area codes for the north-eastern part of Ohio. Specifically, they encompass these areas: Akron, Youngstown, Warren, and Canton. They were once part of the area code 216 and had been created to serve the growing population and the increasing number of cellular phone users.
Area Code 440
On the other hand, area code 440 serves the north-eastern part of Ohio, which includes the Greater Cleveland area. Specifically, 440 encompasses the entire Geauga and Lake counties, almost the whole of Ashtabula and Lorain counties, a portion of Erie County, the north-eastern part of Huron County, and the north-western fringes of Trumbull County. It shares Cuyahoga County with area code 216.
Area Codes 419 and 567
The North American telephone area codes of 419 and 567encompass some of these cities of the north-western fringes of Ohio: Lima (Bluffton,) Toledo (including Bowling Green, Maumee, Holland, Northwood, Ottawa Hills, Waterville, Whitehouse, Oregon, Rossford, Port Clinton, Perrysburg, and Sylvania,) Bryan, Fremont, Defiance, Napoleon, Findlay, Fostoria, Galion, Mansfield, Sandusky, Upper Sandusky, and Ashland. These codes also extend over to the Lake Erie islands that lie to the north of Port Clinton and west of Sandusky. Both 419 and 567 lie within the Eastern Time Zone.
Area Codes 513 and 937
Area code 513 serves the south-western part of Ohio, which includes Cincinnati and its suburban areas, and also the cities of Hamilton, Lebanon, Trenton, Oxford, and Middletown. There are also some people in south east Indiana and northern Kentucky who use this code. It is one of the original area codes that were created as per the North American Numbering Plan. Earlier, it used to cover a much larger part of south-western Ohio but since 1996, it has been divided into area code 937. An interesting point to note in this context is that some areas served by this code are long distance from Cincinnati depending on the prefix used.
Area Code 937
North American telephone area code 937 encompasses a huge area of the south eastern part of Ohio and includes Springfield, Marysville, Dayton, Hillsboro, Fairborn, Wilmington, and Xenia. Some areas north and east of Cincinnati and the designated public areas of the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base also fall under the ambit of area code 937.
Area Code 614
Area code 614 covers the Columbus metropolitan area. One of the original area codes from the North American Numbering Plan of 1947, it once used to cover the entire south-eastern portion of Ohio. In 1998, most of the territories covered by 614 were taken over a new area code 740.
Area Code 740
Area code 740 thus came to serve the whole of central and south-eastern parts of Ohio, except Columbus. This territory includes the cities of Athens, Jackson, Delaware, Lancaster, Chillicothe, Circleville, Gallipolis, Ironton, Marietta, Marion, Mount Vernon, Coshocton, Washington Court House, Newark, Portsmouth, Steubenville, and Zanesville.
