The U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals is the federal appellate court which hearsappeal cases from nine different districts: the Western District of Tennessee, Middle District of Tennessee, Eastern District of Tennessee, Western District of Kentucky, Eastern District of Kentucky, Northern District of Ohio, Southern District of Ohio, Western District of Michigan and Eastern District of Michigan.

Among the 16 judges in the court, one is considered the chief judge, and this office is rotated among all the judges. In order to be considered eligible for this position, the judge must be at least 70 years old or serve for 7 years first. However, these requirements are waived if no judges on the panel meet these criteria. There are also currently nine senior judges in the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals.
