The U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit is located at 21400 U.S. Courthouse, 601 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106-1790. The main phone number for the clerk's office is 215-597-2995. This court hears appeals from criminal and civil cases within five different districts.
The districts within the jurisdiction of the U.S. Third Circuit Court of Appeals are the District of Delaware, District of New Jersey, Western District of Pennsylvania, Eastern District of Pennsylvania and Middle District of Pennsylvania. In addition, this court of appeals will hear cases from the District Court of the Virgin Islands.
There are 14 total active judges in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and many of the cases they hear are commercial in nature. This is due to the fact that the District of Delaware is where the majority of publicly traded companies in the U.S. are incorporated.
The office of the Chief Judge is a responsibility that is rotated among the active judges, and they must either have served seven years on the court or reach the age of 70 before doing so. However, this rule is waived if no active judge meets this criteria.
