Virginia Court Information and Jurisdiction
The courts located in the State of Virginia are noted for the swift and efficient way in which they go about performing their assigned tasks. The courts of Virginia serve a dual purpose. The Supreme Court ranks at the top of the legal system. In fact, this is among the oldest courts in the U.S. that is in operation even today. Today, there are 7 justices and a Chief Justice, and they serve a term for 12 years. Those who have been a resident of the state and members of the Virginia Bar for a minimum of 5 years can be considered as eligible candidates for these positions.
The Appeals Court on the other hand is a fairly new court in the state, having been established only since 1985. This court hears the appeals from lower courts like the Circuit Court. The court has jurisdiction to hear appeals that involve worker's compensation and issues related to claims, decisions made at the Circuit Court, appeals from administrative agencies, issues related to divorce, marriage, child support, custody and other domestic cases.
