Alaska Sex Offender Information

If an individual is found guilty for involvement in sex offenses committed within the limits of Alaska, he or she is regarded as an Alaska sex offender. The sex crimes include procuring, soliciting and patronizing child prostitution, molestation of child, rape, indecent and inappropriate proposals to under-age and adults, downloading child pornography, incestuous relations and/ or children trafficking. Other offenses that form a part of this list include kidnapping both usual and aggravated, unlawful aggravated and usual restraints, sexual assault of first, second or third degree, sexual assault of a child where the offender is under trust and forcible detention.

Alaska Sex Offender Database

According to AS 18.65.087 statute, Department of Public Safety for Alaska needs to maintain a database of sex offenders and child kidnappers within Alaskan boundaries. To create this database, it has been made mandatory for all offenders who have been found guilty and thus sentenced for sexual offense to register. This database ensures the safety of community. In 2008, a statute established that convicts sentenced before August 10, 1994, are not required to register for the database.

Whether you hire an employee for your company, maid or driver for household, nanny for your infant, or relocate to another county, running a quick search through these websites can give you an idea if there is any sex offender living in close proximity to your place.

After Megan Kanka’s case in New Jersey where the seven-year old girl was sexually assaulted and then murdered, the Sex Offender Registration Act was implemented in 1996. The assaulter was a convicted sex offender. There were two legislative findings out of this case, that a sexual offender is very likely to commit the offense yet again once released from confinement and that the public should be informed about the release.

Alaska Sex Offender Registration

In 2003, a statute was implemented in Alaska that mandated that upon release of Alaska sex offenders sentenced for a first time non-aggravated offense, he/she must provide the local police or any law enforcement agencies their personal details. These details include name, aliases, birth date, residential address, employer and employee license number, current photograph, and medical history.

The first time offenders need to register once every year for fifteen continuous years. For multiple and aggravated sexual crimes, offenders need to register every quarter. If the offenders live, work and go to school in some other state that needs to be updated in their personal information as well. These details are included in the database so that when people search for sex offenders in a particular area, they get all necessary information. Failure to register for Alaska sex offender database is a punishable offense and may lead to three to five years of incarceration under Class 3 Felony. As the new mandates that have been effective since January 1, 2009, sex offenders and child kidnappers must report their new email addresses and instant messaging identities the next day of their creation. This includes their registration with any social networking group too. However, this rule is not applicable for those who have been registered on or prior to December 31, 2008. Failure to report is seen as Class A misdemeanor and thus a punishable offense.
