Dallas Texas Court Information
Dallas Texas municipal court is a limited jurisdiction court that has the authority to prosecute criminal offenses and violations of civil ordinances that take place within the boundaries of the city. It has parallel authority with the Justice of Peace Courts where misdemeanor cases of C level are concerned. The penalty in such cases is typically a fine. The judges of Dallas Municipal Court have the power to issue warrants for search or arrest. Jurisdiction over most of the civil cases for this court is nil but the civil cases involving dangerous dogs and their owners comes under its jurisdiction.
Dallas Municipal Court processes traffic citations issued within Dallas city limits. It hears both city and state cases within Dallas except for the felony cases. However, the civil, small claims, juvenile, divorce and bankruptcy cases are not under its jurisdiction.

Procedures of the Dallas Municipal Court
The full time Judge of the Dallas Municipal Court has to be unbiased and should be on call at any hour of the day or night. The court cannot be closed till all the matters on the docket of the day are completed. The Municipal Court is in session when the judge is present on the bench. Visitors as well as employees have to abide by the dress code; no smoking, eating or drinking within the premises; no loitering; no unattended kids, etc. No facial gestures to prompt the witness are allowed. You are not allowed to enter the courtroom with a firearm if you are not the presiding Judge or the security or peace officer.
Motions for continuance need to be presented in writing. The application can be submitted at the Department of Court and Detention Services. If the submission is made by the attorney, the application would be given at Attorney Window. If a pro-se defendant submits a motion for continuance, he or she needs to go to Windows 5 through 17.
