Oregon Sex Offender Registration
Oregon State law (ORS 181.592) sanctions the Oregon State Police to provide details about the registered sex offenders of the state to the general public. In addition, ORS 181.592(4) (c) allows the police to post information about certain sex offenders on their official website so that the public can view these details and be vigilant. But the website only provides information on the sex offenders who are considered as sexual predators under Oregon State Code ORS 181.585 or about those offenders who have a high likelihood of recommitting a serious sexual offense and require a wide range of notification for ensuring the safety of the communities. The website also requires listing the details of the sexually violent offenders in the state as per the Oregon State Code ORS 144.635.
The sex offender registration unit of the Oregon State Police is responsible for updating accurate information about any convicted sex offender within its jurisdiction on a regular basis. The information about the sexual offenders in the state, a particular city, county, or neighborhood can change quite frequently. But this information about the residency status of a sex offender listed in their sex offender registration form may not always contain the current information about his residential address or work address, or any other details of convictions.
The information available through the website of the police department consists of open records, so it is your responsibility to make sure that the records of a particular sex offender generated by the search system is the one that you are looking for. To ensure that the search system generates a positive identification of the sexual predator, his fingerprint identification card is required to make an accurate comparison.
Oregon Sex Offender Registry
The information about the sex offender registry is made available to the public for their safety. The state laws of Oregon require that you use the information available in the sex offender registry only to protect yourself, your children and your loved ones. You cannot use the information available about a sex offender to punish him, or harass him or to discriminate against him. This is considered illegal and may result in a criminal prosecution against you.
If you have information about any alleged violation committed by a registered sex offender in your area or neighborhood, or if you have information that a particular sex offender who is registered with the Oregon State’s sex offender registry does not reside in the residential address that he or she has mentioned in the sex offender registration form, you can contact the designated law enforcement unit that is listed for the registrant.
